  • The RIO DE JANEIRO FIRE DEPARTMENT won of the 2015 International Conrad Dietrich Magirus Award. As part of the award, 10 firefighters from the department traveled to New York City (NYC) to meet with Fire Department of New York colleagues. The Brazilians also visited the famous fire academy on Randall’s Island, the training center where all New York firefighters start their careers. The Brazilian brigade also visited the 9/11 memorial including its museum as well as many famous NYC landmarks and areas. The competition is named for pioneering German firefighter Conrad Dietrich Magirus, who founded Magirus 150 years ago.   • HARRINGTON, INC. is now offering a five-year warranty against failure because of corrosion on its popular H500S piston intake and H1000 ball intake valves.   • The INTERNATIONAL FIRE MARSHALS ASSOCIATION (IFMA) presented its Percy Bugbee Award to National Fire Protection Association Fire Code Regional Director and IFMA Executive Secretary Steven Sawyer. Sawyer is a member of North Stonington (CT) Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. who previously served as deputy chief. Sawyer also served eight years as deputy fire marshal for Yale University. He has been with NFPA for more than 20 years, serving in various departments such as the Public Fire Protection Division, where he staffed numerous fire service standards including deployment, fire service training, and community risk reduction. Sawyer has served as the IFMA Executive Secretary since 1998.www.nfpa.org.
  • STREAMLIGHT®, INC. was awarded the Call2Recycle 2015 Leaders in Sustainability Award for its commitment to battery recycling. Streamlight was part of a nationwide coalition of businesses that helped Call2Recycle divert close to 7.1 million pounds of batteries from U.S. landfills in 2015, a three-percent increase from 2014. Recycled materials included nickel cadmium, lithium ion, nickel metal hydride and small sealed lead acid batteries. Streamlight and several of its distributors are partners with Call2Recycle, Inc., North America’s first and largest consumer battery stewardship program offering no-cost battery and cell phone recycling solutions across the U.S. and Canada. Names in the News

  • Lake County (FL) Fire-Rescue Lieutanant ROB FICKETT was promoted to battalion chief. As one of six frontline battalion chiefs, Fickett now will be responsible for managing 12 fire stations covering 600 square miles of territory and supervising around 25 employees. Fickett is also an instructor at Lake Tech Fire Academy for special operations and a member of Florida Taskforce 4 as a heavy equipment and rigging specialist. He’s currently enrolled in Florida’s Emergency Management Leadership Institute program. A native of Eustis, Fickett began his career with Lake County Fire-Rescue in 2006 and has a long family history in the fire service.
  • DAVID COATNEY was named as the new chief of Dallas (TX) Fire-Rescue. Coatney is a former chief of the Round Rock (TX) Fire Department. He also served in the San Antonio (TX) Fire Department for more than 25 years. Coatney is an Army veteran and a native of Seattle, Washington, where he grew up in a housing project. He was a police officer before switching to the fire department. His background in fire service includes fire suppression, emergency medical services, special operations, emergency management, and homeland security.
  • BOBBY DISANTO was sworn in as the new chief of the Willoughby Hills (OH) Fire Department, replacing retired chief, Richard Harmon. DiSanto, whose first official day on duty was June 6, was selected from approximately 16 applicants. DiSanto intends to implement changes that he thinks will lead to a happier, healthier department with better communication with a focus on firefighter health and fitness. DiSanto also intends on putting an emphasis on better communication with everyone working and communicating on the same page.
