In response to the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, EMERGENCY ONE, INC. (E-ONE) is donating a rescue vehicle to be used as a decontamination unit to the Fire Department of New York (NY). The 19-foot, E-One extruded aluminum rescue body will be mounted on a Freightliner FL80 two-door cab/chassis donated by Freightliner Trucks. Other E-One supplier partners are supporting this effort with relevant donations are Alcoa, Inc., Akzo Nobel/Sikkens, Havis-Shields Equipment Corporation, the Will-Burt Company, Federal Signal Safety Products, Class 1, ROM Corporation, Winco Power Systems, and the Braun Corporation.

SAULSBURY FIRE RESCUE, a subsidiary of E-One, received an order for replacement vehicles from FDNY to replace those lost in the September 11 attack. The order includes five heavy-duty rescues, two tactical rescues, two high-rise rescues, and one satellite pumper.

The U.S. Army ordered an E-One TitanT 4 2 4 ARFF vehicle to replace one that was severely damaged near the point of impact in the September 11 attack on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. E-One used a stock Titan 4 2 4 ARFF and modified it to meet the Army’s requirements. The apparatus will be used at the Pentagon Station for coverage relevant to helicopter air traffic associated with standard operations there.

E-One began delivery on a 23-unit contract for Johannesburg, South Africa, that includes six pumper/tankers, two industrial pumpers, five 110-foot aerial ladders, seven 50-feet Teleboom/water towers, two air trucks for refilling SCBA bottles, and one walk-in rescue.

The NATIONAL FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS FOUNDATION (NFFF) received corporate sponsorship from STREAMLIGHT, INC., a flashlight manufacturer. The NFFF assists the survivors of firefighters who have died in the line of duty and sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, held annually at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. PDSI donated its TeleStaff software to assist the NFFF in managing activities at the World Trade Center. The NFFF used the software to manage, schedule, and track hundreds of firefighters and relief workers at the site.

The New York Metro chapter of the SOCIETY OF FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERS (SFPE) has established two funds to facilitate member financial contributions to the families of those lost in the September 11 attack in New York. Those wishing to contribute should contact jdurante@risklogic.com.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Society of Civil Engineers has invited the SFPE to form part of two engineering teams to investigate the fire engineering issues surrounding the damage at the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Nine SFPE members will form part of two teams that are gathering forensic and other data that will be the basis of an analysis of the fire engineering performance of these structures.

MSA (MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES) received a $3.5 million contract to supply the Chicago (IL) Fire Department with 1,100 MMR Xtreme air masks. The masks include a Quick-FillTM system that allows users to quickly share air from cylinder in an emergency to assure an uninterrupted flow of oxygen and an integrated computer module that alerts users if air cylinder pressure is too low.

DUPONT TYVEK agreed with the KAPPLER SAFETY GROUP, INC. to form a global manufacturing alliance and acquire Kappler’s line of protective garments for industrial safety applications.

The INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FIRE CHIEFS has selected the recipients of its 28th annual scholarship awards. There are 22 recipients from the United States and one from Canada, and the total funding awarded was $19,500. $1,500 awards: Christian Lengel (PA); Sonya Seccurro, (MD); Terri Wick (MN); Thomas Jenkins (OK). $1,000 awards: Kent Campbell (MA); Kenneth Charapata (IL); Diane Collins (NY); John Lippincott (GA). $750 awards: Deborah Cantwell (IN); Leonard Garneau (SC); Mary Ellen Harper (CT); Brian Kemp (VA); Bryan Larsen (UT); Charles LeBlanc (NH); Fred Napp (TX); Martin Welsh (PA). $500 awards: Sabine Bouter (Nova Scotia); Gerald Cooper (OH); Stacey Harter (TX); Christopher McCollum (TX); Jason Neuman (CA); James Poltrock (WI). $500 Explorer Scout Award: Michael Tedeschi (WI).

AMERICAN FIRE RESEARCH, LLC has been selected to conduct a comprehensive resource allocation study for the city of Claremore, Oklahoma. The study will examine crucial aspects of the growing city’s fire flow capabilities, NFPA 1710 compliance, ISO rating, and the effects of heavy rail traffic on the city. American Fire Research of Tulsa, Oklahoma, specializes in advanced resource allocation analysis.

FIRE PROTECTION PUBLICATIONS appointed Christopher D. Neal director. Previously, Neal served as program coordinator for the Oklahoma State University Fire and Emergency Management Program.

ELKHART BRASS named Jim Barron southeast regional manager. He will be responsible for providing dealer support and resource services, equipment demonstrations, and promoting Elkhart Brass firefighting products in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.
