  • DRÄGER secured National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) certification for its standard-resolution UCF 6000 and UCF 7000 thermal imaging cameras (TICs). The company also introduced a new NFPA-certified addition to its product line: the UCF 8000. Dräger is now the only manufacturer to offer a full line of NFPA-approved TICs, enabling fire departments to choose the cameras that best meet their needs and budgets. The Dräger UCF 6000 and UCF 7000 are the first standard-resolution cameras (160 × 120 pixels) on the market to meet NFPA requirements for thermal imaging. www.draeger.com/fire.
  • GLOBE MANUFACTURING COMPANY continued its partnership with the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund at FDIC International 2015, the nation’s largest firefighter training conference and exhibition held April 22-25 in Indianapolis. With its supplier partner, 3M, Globe invited attendees to try its new G-XTREME® 3.0 turnout gear on the Globe Virtual Firefighter Athletic Circuit and committed to make a donation to the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund in each firefighter’s name. This year, Globe had firefighters spin a wheel to determine the donation-$10, $20, $50, or $100.   • STREAMLIGHT®, INC. donated $30,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) including $20,000 in proceeds from sales of the company’s specially marked NFFF Red Nano Light® and Red Vantage® helmet light. Streamlight earmarks $1 and $3, respectively, from the sale of each light for the NFFF. The company also contributed $10,000 for renewal of its “Bronze Helmet” NFFF sponsorship. Both donations will assist the non-profit organization in commemorating the lives of firefighters who have died in the line of duty and in supporting their families and co-workers. www.firehero.org.   • The INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FIRE CHIEFS (IAFC) was awarded a 2015 Gold Circle Award in the membership recruitment category by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) for its “We are the IAFC” campaign. Launched in January 2014, the campaign featured IAFC members of different ranks and experience levels. Each member profile-under the headline “I Am the IAFC”-featured a photo of the member and briefly described my need, IAFC resource used and the result.   • The NORTH SHORE (WI) FIRE DEPARTMENT (NSFD) received the 2015 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The grant will support the continuation of the department’s “Prevent, Prepare, and React” home assessment and smoke alarm installation campaign. A risk analysis of the seven communities the NSFD serves showed that the percentage of adults 65 and over was above the national average. In 2014, NFPA awarded the NSFD and local health department training through the Remembering When™ Conference to administer fire and fall prevention education to older adults. Since then the team has presented Remembering When™ to more than 300 residents and conducted 28 home assessments. www.nfpa.org/freeaccess.
  • The CONGRESSIONAL FIRE SERVICES INSTITUTE and MASIMO honored the Caribou (ME) Fire and Ambulance Department, the County of Henrico (VA) Division of Fire, and the Scottsdale (AZ) Fire Department for best practices and innovative solutions in the delivery of emergency medical services with the Excellence in Fire Service-Based EMS Award. First presented in 2011, the Excellence in Fire Service-Based EMS Award has recognized fire departments from across the nation for developing and enhancing the delivery of emergency medical services to address the growing challenges in delivering emergency medical care.

  • At FDIC International 2015, DAVID CONRAD (left), a captain in Mooresville (NC) Fire Rescue, received the Volunteer Service Award from Conference Director Diane Rothschild. “David has been an excellent role model for the younger members of the group (who numbered more than 160 this year) and continues to be a valuable asset on the FDIC volunteer team. He is well respected and looked up to by all.”
  • On April 12, retired Fairfax County (VA) Chief GLENN A. GAINES died at the age of 72. Gaines was also the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator for the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). He began his USFA tenure in March 2009 and was responsible for managing USFA programs and training activities conducted at the National Emergency Training Center. Gaines began his fire service career as a member of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department in Virginia. He served in numerous capacities over the course of his 35-year career, and was in charge of the nationally recognized Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Urban Search and Rescue team.
  • BRIAN A. DALE was appointed chief of the Salt Lake City (UT) Fire Department (SLCFD) on May 4 by Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. Dale, SLUFD deputy chief since 2009 under former chief Kurt Cook, is a 30-year Salt Lake City firefighting veteran and a Salt Lake City native. He joined the SLCFD in 1986 as a firefighter and paramedic. In 2006, Dale became division chief over medical services and incident safety. He developed the department’s first automated electronic patient care reporting system.
