The new engine changes also prompted the enhancement of the transmission controls, to the Allison® GenV, and to the electrical system. >> FORT GARRY FIRE TRUCKS announced the completion of its new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing plant. The state-of-the-art facility is located in the CentrePort Industrial Park adjacent to the Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, airport in the rural municipality of Rosser. The new manufacturing plant is equipped with cutting-edge manufacturing and finishing equipment that will allow the company to maintain its position as Canada’s leading fire apparatus manufacturer. The facility will also house the company’s premier rubber manufacturing division, its Fire Truck Parts Sales, and its Fire Truck Service/Mobile service division.

>> The ILLINOIS FIRE SERVICE INSTITUTE (IFSI) received a grant from the Motorola Foundation to help offset the cost of IFSI’s Basic Firefighter/NFPA Firefighter 1 Academy. The seven-week program will be $900 less per student for the two 2013 academies. The grant is only available for the 2013 academies. Six additional topics are being added: Courage to be Safe, HazMat Awareness, Technical Rescue Awareness, Fire Service Vehicle Operator and NIMS 100 and NIMS 700. To further enhance students’ and departments’ access to training, HazMat Operations and Vehicle Machinery Operations are offered immediately following the end of Academy. >> R·O·M CORPORATION acquired Fire Research Corporation (FRC). FRC will now become a subsidiary of R·O·M. FRC Founder Jack McLoughlin along with his partners Toh Meng and Neocles Athanasiades will continue in their current roles at FRC. Meng will assume the role of President of R·O·M’s Electrical Component Division. >> The State of New Jersey awarded KME a new contract for firefighting vehicles that allows all fire departments within the state to purchase apparatus more easily and cost effectively. Fire departments and municipalities can procure trucks directly off the contract and take advantage of the volume discounts offered. The contract also allows departments to minimize the delays and extensive costs associated with the administration and legal review of public bids. >> ROSENBAUER received its 500th order for its industry-leading Commander chassis from the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company in Sussex County, Delaware. The sale was achieved in the same year that the Commander custom chassis was introduced to the fire service. The 109-foot Viper EXT rear-mount aerial for Greenwood will be built on an R600 Commander chassis with a Cummins ISX12 500 HP engine. >> SCOTT SAFETY pledged $10,000 to the National Volunteer Fire Council’s (NVFC) Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund. The donation will go to help firefighters impacted by severe disasters such as Hurricane Sandy. The fund provides stipends of $250 to help firefighters meet basic needs in the wake of a federally- or state-declared disaster. The NVFC Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund relies entirely on the support of individuals and organizations to assist volunteer first responders in need. The NVFC donates all administrative costs associated with the fund; 100 percent of contributions go to help volunteer first responders impacted by disaster. www.nvfc.org. www.scottsafety.com.

Two workers were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion Tuesday at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport.
