>> MOMENTOUS INSURANCE BROKERAGE partnered with FIREMAN’S FUND INSURANCE COMPANY to donate $25,000 to the Detroit (MI) Fire Department. The grant will fund basic firefighting equipment for its 1,450 members, including axes and pry bars. The grant was presented at the Tribeca Film Festival following the world premiere of “Burn: One Year on the Front Lines of the Battle to Save Detroit,” a documentary directed by Tom Putnam and Brenna Sanchez; actor Denis Leary served as executive producer. The grant is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. >> The BROCKTON (MA) FIRE DEPARTMENT (BFD) received the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA’s) 2012 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant. The $5,000 grant will support the department’s fire and life safety public education initiative in high-rise housing, called the “High-Rise Apartment Safety and Emergency Preparedness Program.” NFPA awards this grant annually to support a communitywide fire and life safety education program or campaign. In 2011, BFD responded to 21,277 incidents; 1,180 occurred at the same five high-rise properties. BFD will partner with the Brockton Housing Authority and the Brockton Emergency Management Agency to provide public education to these five properties and will then expand the outreach to other housing developments. www.nfpa.org.

>> The CONGRESSIONAL FIRE SERVICES INSTITUTE and the NATIONAL FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS FOUNDATION awarded the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) with the 2012 Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award for its Skid Avoidance for Fire Apparatus Drivers Program. With support from various fire service stakeholders including the Oregon Fire Chiefs, Oregon State Firefighters Council, and the Oregon Volunteer Firefighters Association, DPSST developed the program to address one of the leading causes of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service: emergency vehicle accidents. Named after retired Senator Paul S. Sarbanes of Maryland, the award recognizes organizations for their outstanding contributions to firefighter health and safety. www.cfsi.org. www.firehero.org.

>> The A FOAM AUTHORITY announced a call for new membership in its Open Membership Program. The A Foam Authority is a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote the development, establishment, improvement, and expansion of the use of Class A foam in fire suppression and to provide Class A foam education. New members can choose to become actively involved with the organization. The A Foam authority has Membership, Technical, Marketing and Education committees currently accepting new members. >> The U.S. FIRE ADMINISTRATION announced the National Fire Academy’s 2011 Annual Outstanding Research Award winners and its Roll of Honor inductee. The 2011 Outstanding Research Award recipients follow: Executive Development Course Awardee—Scott Somers, administrator, City of Mesa (AZ) Fire Department; Executive Analysis of Community Risk Reduction Course Awardee—Brian Ashton, captain, City of Boise (ID) Fire Department; Executive Analysis of Community Risk Reduction Course Awardee—Steven T. Wright, deputy fire chief, South Kitsap Fire and Rescue Department (Port Orchard, Washington); Executive Analysis of Fire Service Operations in Emergency Management Course Awardee—Stephen Abbott, battalion chief, North County Fire Protection District (Fallbrook, California). Deputy Fire Chief Daniel N. Olson of Kitsap County Fire District 18 (Poulsbo, Washington) will be inducted into the Executive Fire Officer Program Applied Research Roll of Honor.

>> STREAMLIGHT®, INC. donated $17,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), representing proceeds from sales of the company’s Red Nano Light®. Streamlight earmarks $1.00 from the sale of each keychain light to the NFFF. The company also announced the renewal of its “Bronze Helmet” sponsorship of NFFF with a contribution of $10,000. Both donations will assist the nonprofit organization in commemorating the lives of firefighters who have died in the line of duty and supporting their families and coworkers.
