The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION’s Firewise Communities program announced the 2010 Firewise Leadership Award winners, recognizing the most significant local efforts in safeguarding people and communities from the threat of wildfire. Winners were selected based on their impact at the local, statewide, and regional levels. The regional winner was Fire Safe Council of Nevada County, Nevada; the state-level winners were David Yegge, the Florida Division of Forestry Mitigation Specialists, and the Texas Forest Service Prevention and Mitigation Department; and local-level winners were Melissa Yunas, Seth Sommers, and Diamondhead Community of Arkansas. www.firewise.org. www.nfpa.org.

5.11 TACTICAL will honor public safety officers involved in incidents on 9/11 and donate all profits from a special line of tactical clothing to three funds that pay tribute to those who serve. The goal is donate $250,000 to the FDNY Foundation for fire service, $250,000 for EMS operations, and $250,000 to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. 5.11 Tactical is using a unique anniversary logo that honors the heroes of 9/11, which will be embroidered on a special line of apparel created specifically for this project. More than 20 ribbon cutters dedicated the ILLINOIS FIRE SERVICE INSTITUTE’s (IFSI’s) new Learning Resource and Research Center at IFSI’s 27-acre training grounds. The more than 21,000-square foot building houses new IFSI capabilities that includes a library, firefighter memorial hall, international conference center, incident management training facility, high-speed Web connectivity, and firefighter life safety research center. The library has more than 18,000 items in its multimedia collection and is the only fire service dedicated library in Illinois. The NATIONAL VOLUNTEER FIRE COUNCIL has partnered with DURACELL to launch the Power Those Who Protect Us battery donation program. The program’s goal is to secure 10 million donated batteries for the 23,000 departments across the U.S. The program has been featured in several national media interviews with its celebrity spokesperson and former NFL star, Kurt Warner.
