IFTE PLC has purchased SYMTRON SYSTEMS, INC. United Kingdom-based IFTE develops and supplies live fire disaster training equipment. Symtron manufactures computer-controlled live fire disaster training equipment.

OSHKOSH TRUCK CORPORATION, parent company of PIERCE MANUFACTURING, INC., has agreed to acquire MEDTEC AMBULANCE CORPORATION. The acquisition includes the custom ambulance manufacturer’s AMERICAN FIRE & RESCUE division, which manufactures and markets rescue vehicles to the fire service.

LAERDAL MEDICAL CORPORATION announced that the American Heart Association’s Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) materials may be ordered online at www.laerdal.com. The full line of ECC training materials includes the new Guidelines 2000 for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

The FARMERS INSURANCE GROUP announced that California firefighters may qualify for a 10-percent discount on their auto insurance. According to the company’s research, firefighters are generally safe drivers, according to Jerry Carnahan, Farmers’ California state executive. New technology allows companies to identify specific differences within broader groups and base premiums on individual risks. To qualify, individuals must be commissioned as a firefighter as designated by a city, county, state, or federal agency recognized in California. Bristol, Wisconsin, addressed its daytime emergency volunteer shortage with the PUBLIC WORKS AND FIRE/RESCUE PROGRAM, in which public works employees are crosstrained to respond to emergency calls. The town of 4,600 has fewer than 550 fire/rescue calls annually, which is not enough to warrant a full-time fire/rescue department. Since the program began in 1988, Bristol has achieved a 100-percent response rate and has been able to provide mutual aid to surrounding communities. The town was a finalist in the 2000 Innovations in American Government Awards Program, sponsored by Harvard University, the Ford Foundation, and the Council for Excellence in Government.

FERRARA FIRE APPARATUS, INC. appointed Jeffrey A. Bean executive vice president. He will lead the company’s sales organization and oversee the national network of dealers and factory direct representatives.

The AKRON BRASS COMPANY will implement a $7 million, 62,000-square-foot building project to expand its Wooster, Ohio, operations. The expansion involves moving certain operations to an existing 40-acre site and will more than double the size. The project includes a lake to test many of the company’s larger firefighting products.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF EMERGENCY VEHICLE TECHNICIANS (NAEVT) awarded David L. Williams its 2000 Technician of the Year award. Williams, an emergency vehicle technician (EVT) with the Abilene (TX) Fire Department, worked with Texas and Oklahoma EVT associations in setting up the first Texas/Oklahoma technician training program.

NAEVT announced that VFIS is a Gold Life Partner under the Operation Jump Start campaign. As a Gold Life Partner, VFIS will be the exclusive founder of the Instructor’s Network, which allows NAEVT members responsible for the training and education of those demonstrating or operating an emergency vehicle the chance to receive assistance in recognized domains. VFIS will also serve on NAEVT’s membership advisory council and will assist with the development of program enhancements for train-the-trainer and for establishing a national training agenda for the NAEVT’S Institute for Emergency Vehicle Technology and Education.

SPARTAN MOTORS, INC., appointed Charles D. Drake president of ROAD RESCUE, INC. The emergency vehicle manufacturer produces custom modular ambulances and specialty vehicles. Drake will be responsible for day-to-day operations, focusing on increasing market share and improving profitability.

LION APPAREL named Andrew E. Pompe major accounts sales manager. Previously, he served as protective clothing program manager, deputy safety officer, and fire captain for the Philadelphia (PA) Fire Department. He will be responsible for working with North American fire departments to establish more cost-effective and efficient means of personal protective equipment procurement using Lion TotalCareTM prime vendoring and electronic ordering.

PHOENIX RESCUE EQUIPMENT named Rodney Miller regional sales manager for its northeast territory.
