A $1 million, three-year grant to the UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA’s Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health will fund research to determine whether medical treatment can help prevent the progression of early atherosclerotic disease in firefighters. Standard medical tests for firefighters do not detect early heart disease. This study will determine if drugs are effective in preventing increases in artery-lining thickness over time in firefighters who do not have high levels of total cholesterol. The grant is through the Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grants program. This research is the latest in a series of firefighter health and safety projects under way or recently completed by faculty members at the Zuckerman College of Public Health. www.publichealth.arizona.edu.
