  • United Kingdom-based AVON RUBBER PLC. a manufacturer of NBC respirators, has acquired INTERNATIONAL SAFETY INSTRUMENTS, INC. (ISI), based in Lawrenceville, Georgia. ISI will be part of the new Avon Protection Systems (APS) division. ISI produces complementary respiratory products such as the CBRN-approved Viking. ISI will continue to cover the firefighting and law enforcement markets. Together, Avon Protection and ISI will also develop integrated solutions addressing the current and future needs of these and other customer groups.
  • UNITED PLASTIC FABRICATING, INC. has signed a contract to construct a new expanded facility in Neenah, Wisconsin. Currently occupying a 48,000-square-foot facility in Neenah, UPF will move into a new 100,000-square-foot facility, occupying 70,000 square feet, by December 2005. In addition to moving into the new building, UPF will produce its 50,000th tank and mark its 20th year of business in December. UPF has also consolidated its Nevada facility into the Wisconsin facility.

  • The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE FIRE MARSHALS (NASFM), in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation, has developed a new training program to help local emergency response agencies adequately respond to pipeline emergencies and is currently holding regional Train-The-Trainer sessions to ensure local communities receive the crucial training. The Pipeline Emergencies training program equips experienced instructors to teach the pipeline safety curriculum to emergency responders in their regions. The course helps emergency responders understand pipeline operations, common products transmitted and distributed through them, and tactical response guidelines to deal with accidents.

    The United States has approximately 327,000 miles of natural gas transmission pipelines, 1.8 million miles of natural gas distribution pipelines, and 161,000 miles of liquid pipelines.

  • PIERCE MANUFACTURING INC. received an order from the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, through the Department of Homeland Security, for six mobile air support vehicles to be used in the event of a large-scale terrorist attack or natural disaster. The order is valued at $2.1 million and deliveries are scheduled to be completed by December 2005. These mobile air support units will protect the Newark Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) area, which covers Bergen, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Union, and Essex counties; the Lincoln and Holland tunnels; and numerous Port Authority transit tunnels that connect New Jersey with New York City. Each vehicle will be housed by a local fire department located in one of the six counties of the UASI area, where they will respond to everyday local department calls and be on call for any large-scale incident. All of the vehicles are built on Pierce Saber® four-door custom chassis, with a 22-inch raised roof, an air-conditioned rehab section, an 18-foot aluminum body with roll-up doors, a Cummins 330-hp engine, and an Allison 3000 EVS transmission. Other features include a 33.2 cubic-foot on-board breathing air compressor with air storage capacity in an eight-cylinder, 6,000-psi ASME cascade system with a six-bottle fill station, and each vehicle holds 102 spare SCBA cylinders. Options include a Mako 33.2-cfm air compressor, a 40-kw PTO generator, a 320-amp alternator, Whelen LED lights, 110-volt cord reels, and scene lighting.

      PELICAN™ PRODUCTS has named Jon Prior regional sales manager in the Commercial Sales Division. He will be responsible for the management and oversight of Pelican’s business development and sales activities in Alaska, Northern California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Before joining Pelican, Prior worked for United American Sales, a leading wholesale distributor of personal protection equipment and industrial supplies.

      • The Boston Fire Department chose ODYSSEY AUTOMOTIVE SPECIALTY to supply new command cabinet systems for its Ford Excursions. Odyssey met the department’s requirements by integrating rack mount channel and tailoring the design to allow Allcom, Boston’s communications company, to install the necessary equipment. Inside each Excursion, the rear seats are turned to the rear so the operators can face the equipment. In addition to the interior equipment rack, there is a pullout tabletop for keyboards and report writing and a lower removable panel to access power supplies and other equipment. From the rear, two large and easily accessible equipment areas allow for the mounting of almost four feet of equipment in a well-ventilated area.

      • The NEW YORK STATE ASSOCIATION OF FIRE CHIEFS (NYSAC) announced that its 100th Annual Conference and FIRE 2006 exposition will be held June 15-17, 2006, in Lake George, New York. The decision was made after a review of comments and requests of attendees, exhibitors, and members. In addition, NYSAC announced a new event, the New York Chiefs Island Conference and Expo, will be held September 23-24, 2006, at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, in conjunction with the Nassau and Suffolk counties fire chief’s councils.
