Fire crews responded over the weekend to a fire that destroyed multiple buildings in the city of Cohoes, New York. Sidewinder Photography shared an incident report and some photos from the scene.
The city of Cohoes along with Green Island, Watervliet, and the Watervliet Arsenal were toned for a reported structure fire at 123 Main Street, with a caller reporting a house was on fire. The first-arriving unit declared a signal 30 and a working fire in a two-story dwelling. Firefighters pulled multiple handlines in the building but the fire had spread between the first and second floor and quickly spread to the attic.
Command pulled all firefighters from the building because of the quickly spreading fire and begin a defensive attack to try to stop it from spreading to the adjacent buildings. Firefighters used multiple handlines and deck guns to try to stop the rapidly spreading fire, but they were not able to the fire under control.
The heavy fire from 123 Main Street got into a adjacent three-story building and rapidly spread to the cockloft area. At this time, command requested the city of Troy and Albany to the scene for additional staffing. The three-story building quickly became fully involved, sending flames up more than 40 feet in the air with multiple explosions. People were reporting they could see the massive fire from across the Hudson river up to a mile away.
Truck 1 from the city of Troy arrived on scene and went right to work with a master stream operation, but they encountered many challenges, not least of which was the large number of power lines plague the scene, which made it difficult for firefighters to use the master streams on the fire.
With the fire from the three-story building rapidly spreading to two adjacent buildings, firefighters quickly switched to an all-out master stream operation to try to get the fire under control. The heavy fire from the three-story building had extended into two additional buildings around it. At one point, firefighters had five buildings heavily involved on scene.
Command set up a collapse zone around the front of the building as the roofs in three of the fire buildings collapsed and command feared the building could fall forward. One of the buildings had a large part of its roof land about 20 feet from the ladder truck. Firefighters remained on scene throughout the night into the early morning getting the fire under control.
Four of the buildings were a total loss. No firefighters were injured on the scene and all the residents made it out safely. The fire is under investigation at this time by the Cohoes police department.
