Chicago Firefighters Respond to Explosion and Building Collapse

Chicago (IL) firefighters responded Tuesday, September 20, 2022, to an explosion and building collapse.

According to the department’s Twitter account, the explosion occurred at Central & West End. There were confirmed injuries with at least 10 ambulances responding and eight transports, according to the department, and three people were reportedly critically injured. An adjacent buliding was evacauted, and searches had been completed as of 12:10 p.m. Eastern time.

Photos and video from the scene showed fire units operating among bricks and considerable debris on scene that damaged vehicles.

News reports indicated that the explosion occurred on the top floor of a 36-unit, four-story apartment building in the South Austin neighborhood of the city. The cause of the blast has yet to be determined.
