A Chicago Fire Department lieutenant injured in a fire earlier this month has passed away.

Lieutenant Kevin Ward, 59, injured in a house fire on Balmoral, passed away at Loyola Medical Center, according to an update from the Chicago Fire Department. Lieutenant Ward joined the department in 1996.

According to news reports, several other firefighters were also injured in August 11 fire, and a Mayday was declared during the incident.

Lieutenant Ward was surrounded by family as he died, according the Chicago Fire Department.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration report, on Friday, August 11, 2023, Lieutenant Kevin P. Ward responded to a fire at a single-family residence. While fighting the fire in the basement, he was critically injured, and a Mayday was transmitted. He was transported to the Resurrection Hospital and subsequently transferred to Loyola Medical Center. On Monday he succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the fire. Three other firefighters were also injured in the incident, and all have been released from the hospital.
