According to Canaan Fire Company Chief Rick Weaver, at about 1530 hrs, the calls for a fire at the Ford Farm on Route 44 started to come in. Arriving units found the main dairy barn on the property to be fully involved. Fire spread quickly to the silo and then to another barn in the rear of the property.
Water supply was a challenge. Units laid out 1400 feet of five inch hose through the farm fields to the Blackberry River. Several tankers were called in to back up the hose relay.
Canaan Ladder 1’s aerial device knocked down the initial fire load and blankets of compressed air foam were used to cover the abundant piles of hay. Heavy equipment was brought in to overhaul the fire buildings. The cause is being classified as accidental. No injuries were reported. Units from Norfolk, Lakeville, Falls Village, and Colebrook provided mutual aid. In addition, Sheffield, MA units covered the Canaan fire station and Colebrook covered the Norfolk fire station.
