Applications to be appointed superintendent of the National Fire Academy can be filed by anyone who believes he meets the basic qualifications. The United States Fire Administration has announced that applicants must submit Office of Personnel Management form 171, which is available at any post office, and the application must be received by the USFA by midnight, Sept. 30.

Applications must be sent to Assistant to the Administrator, United States Fire Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Washington, D.C. 20472.

The USFA defined the basic qualifications for superintendent of the National Fire Academy as follows:

Familiar with and supportive of the training needs and programs for the nation’s fire service.

Demonstrate proven leadership and . communications skills.

Clear understanding of, appreciation for and commitment to training and education programs.

Have a successful experience at high level in administrative, fiscal and personnel management.

Have an ability to plan and conceptualize new and innovative curriculum programs.

Minimum of bachelor’s degree in education or in a field allied to fire prevention and control (master’s degree desirable).

Must have understanding and knowledge of government, especially Fire departments or public safety units and how they function.

Have an ability to welcome faculty, students from the fire service, administrators from other post-secondary training institutions, and local and state governmental officials.
