The City of Milton (FL) Fire Department


designed its EMERGENCY ONE pumper to be self-sufficient for an initial fire attack and to meet the fire station’s space limitations, according to Chief John E. Reble. Additional pumpers with callback personnel back up the engine. The 4.2-square-mile rural/suburban community of 8,000 has minor industries, businesses, commercial occupancies, and many older historic buildings with heavy fire loading.

    The Woodward (OK) Fire Department


    designed this AMERICAN LAFRANCE rescue truck to provide EMS, firefighting, and extrication services for Woodward County, according to Chief Jim Anderson. The department protects 19,000 residents within a 1,242-square-mile jurisdiction with varying terrain. U.S. Routes 270 and 412 pass through the area.

    The Star Hose Company in Emerald, Pennsylvania,


    purchased a KME pumper/tanker to supply water in the mostly rural area. Chief Dale M. Rex says there are very few hydrants in the 25-square-mile township. Three fire companies protect 6,600 residents. In addition to this unit, two other companies in the area purchased a full-size, four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 65-foot aerial ladder to meet the needs of the community.

    The Bellmead (TX) Fire Department


    designed its PIERCE quint with a platform instead of an aerial tip for added safety for firefighters and the public, according to Chief James Karl. Bellmead (a subdivision of Waco) is primarily a bedroom community but also includes light industrial, commercial, and warehouse occupancies. It is 13 square miles and has a population of 8,500. Additionally, there are multistory hotels on the town boundary line; all can be accessed by the boom’s height.

    The Wea Township Community Fire Department in Lafayette, Indiana,


    designed its W.S. DARLEY pumper with CAFS to increase its fire extinguishing capabilities with a limited crew. Firefighter Kenneth W. Croy explains that the 27-square-mile jurisdiction of 21,000 includes a high school and has a 40/60-percent mix of suburban residential and agricultural areas. Volunteer membership has changed within recent years; factory and officer workers dominate, but many are not able to respond during work hours. The CAFS system permits lighter, more maneuverable hoselines with a quicker fire knockdown using much less water, doing less damage, and requiring less operating time. The vehicle cab can also be used for rehab.

    The Mt. Kisco (NY) Rescue/Fire Police


    designed its RESCUE 1 vehicle to handle extrications and render fireground support, according to Commissioner Russell Ross. The department protects a two-square-mile village, a 15-square-mile outlying district, and 9,800 inhabitants. The department covers the Saw Mill River Parkway.

    The Sheldon (IA) Fire Department


    designed its LUVERNE pumper with increased pumping capacity and adequate equipment storage space to relieve an overburdened rescue truck, according to Chief Jerry Meyer. The department protects a two-square-mile town and a rural area of 30 square miles. The larger pump would help in an incident at a soybean processing plant in town that uses hexane. The population is 5,000.

    The Denver (CO) Fire Department


    at the Denver International Airport operates this DANKO rapid response vehicle to supplement a Class A pumper in all aircraft alerts. Assistant Chief Charles Davis explains that the department required a light, fast, and highly maneuverable vehicle. The unit would also transport a crew to emergencies in parking structures and in a below-grade tunnel system. The apparatus performs as an off-road rescue vehicle, and there are two additional units on order. The airport occupies 53 square miles, and more than 100,000 people pass through daily.

      The Norwich Township Fire Department in Hilliard, Ohio,


      protects a 39-square-mile area of 24,000 that includes rural, residential, light commercial, and industrial occupancies. The department protects eight miles of Interstates 70 and 270. Assistant Chief David Long explains that since the department provides fire, EMS, and rescue services, the SUTPHEN pumper is designed to be versatile. The vehicle is laid out for easy access to equipment, has added space for rescue and medical equipment, and maintains full firefighting capability. To reduce on-scene noise at operations, the department uses a hydraulic generator and an electric pump to power the rescue tool.

      The Lake Placid Village (NY) Fire Department


      uses this NORTHWIND MARINE fireboat to fight fires directly, supply water to onshore pumpers and tankers, rescue victims, and serve as an ambulance, according to Chief Richard Boyer. The lake itself is about 35 square miles in area and is surrounded by some 250 homes, many of them large and most accessible only by water. During the summer months, about 1,000 people occupy these homes.

      Massport Fire-Rescue at Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts,


      has in service two UNITED PLASTIC MANUFACTURING foam trailers. Assistant Chief Jack Kreckie says that the trailers are designed for fire attack to protect the airport’s new fuel tank farm and provide rapid resupply of foam concentrate to ARFF vehicles.

The 12-square-mile jurisdiction is primarily suburban and has more than 15,000 residents. The department protects U.S. Routes 6 and 218, Iowa Route 965, and Interstates 80 and 380.

      The Princeton (KY) Fire Department


      uses its FERRARA pumper/tanker to cover the city and most of Caldwell County. Chief Brent A. Francis says that hydrants are plentiful in the city but are few and far between in the county. The unit therefore responds first out to calls in the county and third out for calls in the city. The department required more SCBA equipment space and increased water capacity for county operations than the previous tanker provided. The new unit also provides a quicker, safer response. The jurisdiction of 13,250 includes 356 square miles of rural area that includes light manufacturing and agricultural sections.
