  • The Levittown Fire Company No. 2 in Pennsylvania operates this pumper-Squrt built through the combined efforts of Seagrave and Snorkel/Economy.

In the first-due area there are more than 7,000 single-family homes as well as two apartment complexes, 11 schools, 13 churches, and roughly 310 businesses in strip-style shopping centers—plus 30,000 people.

Fire Chief Frank Derr explains that with a volunteer force, there is sometimes a lack of sufficient manpower at certain hours of the day. This pumper/Squrt serves the need for a diversified tactical operation.

The unit has a 175-inch wheelbase and is mounted on a Model “J” chassis with a four-door cab that seats six. It has a Waterous Model CMU two-stage, 1,500-gpm pump with five-inch preconnected front intake and two three-inch rear discharges. A five-inch intake at the rear of the apparatus can be used as an inlet tor feeding the Squrt or discharging water for hoselines when the boom is not in use. The Squrt besom, with a maximum height of 54 feet, has four-inch feed piping and an Akron 1,000-gpm nozzle at the tip. A three-inch pipe from the pump feeds an Akron Apollo gun with a 1,000-gpm nozzle mounted midship on the right side of the vehicle. Four 1 ⅛-inch attack lines are mounted in crosslays.

The vehicle body has six tool compartments, and two banks of Federal Nightfighter lights are mounted behind the cab. An angled back-up light on each side of the body ahead of the rear axle illuminates the path alongside the vehicle, assisting the driver at night. (Photo by John M. Malecky.)
