AL Firefighters Rescue Critical Victim from Apartment Fire

According to a report from AL.com, Birmingham (AL) Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) pulled a trapped victim from an eight-unit apartment building as fire swept through the structure Wednesday night. A second resident sustained minor injuries.

BFRS was dispatched at 8:30 p.m. to the apartment building at the intersection of Warrior Road and Prince Avenue with reports of possible trapped victims on the second floor.

BFRS Battalion Chief Jackie Hicks said that, on arrival, heavy fire and smoke were coming from the building’s top floor.

During their search, firefighters found and pulled out one person who was alone in an apartment. Hicks said the victim was then rushed to UAB Hospital and is in critical condition. No firefighters were injured.

Several residents were forced out of the building but were given blankets provided by first responders. Hicks said they are still not sure how many people were displaced.

As of 9:30 p.m., firefighters were still extinguishing hot spots. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
