Airport Disaster Van

Airport Disaster Van

A unique emergency vehicle, with enough medical supplies to care for 300 seriously injured aircrash victims has recently been added to the emergency facilities at Miami International Airport.

The 24-foot insulated and refrigerated disaster van is headquartered at the airport’s mid-field fire station.

The temperature inside the van is maintained at 68°F by a refrigeration unit which operates by either commercial electrical power or gasoline powered generator. This prevents heat and moisture damage to drugs, IV and other medical supplies. The refrigerated vehicle can also be used as a temporary morgue.

At a disaster scene, the van is utilized by the fire department as a medical command and medical distribution point. The vehicle has radios for both fire department and airport ground control frequencies.
