AFSA’s 2008 National Scholarship Contest winners announced

The American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) is pleased to offer its support, through its online scholarship program, to ten lucky graduating high school seniors as they pursue their higher education goals. These national winners were randomly selected from 23,011 entries to receive a one time $2,000 AFSA scholarship, http://www.afsascholarship.org, payable to their respective college, university or trade school. This online scholarship contest awards ten (10) – $2,000 prizes annually.

The ten national winners for 2008 are: Katherine Bennett, Lighthouse Point, Fla.; Katherine Courtney, Carpenteria, Calif.: David MacGregor, Naples, Florida; Jaeha “Janice” Han, Plainview, New York; Annelese Jones, Austin, Texas; Richard Jordan, Amherst, New Hampshire; Kristen Kelly, Narrowsburg, New York; Kristi Materio, San Bernardino, California; Sam O’Ijeh, Red Oak, Texas; and Laura Reasoner, Columbus, Ohio.

Applicants were required to read a passage about fire sprinklers–which described their history, how they operate to save lives and property, and the types of careers that are available in the industry–and take a ten-question reading comprehension test. For each question answered correctly, students received one entry into a drawing for one of ten $2,000 scholarships. A total of 10 entries per applicant into the drawing were possible.

Since its creation in 1996, the AFSA scholarship contest has sought to promote the scholarship outside of the fire sprinkler industry in the hope of reaching students who may otherwise never have recognized the importance of automatic fire protection.

Now in its 12th year, the AFSA scholarship continues to grow attracting over 23,000 applicants from across the nation during the 2007-08 school year alone. A pattern that AFSA hopes will continue, as more rising seniors login next year for their shot at a $2,000 prize. Interested students may logon to enter to win beginning September 2008!

To be eligible, applicants must be a high school senior during the 2008-09 academic year who will attend a college, university or trade school in the United States in fall 2009. The AFSA Scholarship is open to U.S. citizens and legal residents.
