ACT Foundation to Conduct EMS Seminars in Fall
Under contract to the International Association of Fire Fighters, and with the cooperation of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the non-profit ACT (Advanced Coronary Treatment) Foundation will conduct a series of Fire Service EMS Management Seminars in October and November. Funding for the seminars has been provided by the United States Fire Administration.
The first of the 2 1/2 day programs will be held at the National Fire Academy, Emmitsburg, Md., Oct. 1-3, 1980. On Oct. 20-22, a similar program will be held at the Rivermont Hotel in Memphis, Tenn. The final program in the series will be held at the Snowbird Lodge near Salt Lake City, Utah, on Nov. 5-7.
Session leaders announced
Faculty appointments to the seminar series were announced recently by James O. Page, ACT’s Executive Director. Presenting the topic of “EMS Planning in the Fire Service” will be Huntington Beach, Calif. Fire Chief Ray Picard. Division Chief Bill Roberts of Dallas, Tex. will lead the session on “Fire Service/EMS Information Systems.” Marilyn J. Gifford, M.D., recently appointed as medical director of the Colorado Springs Fire Department’s advanced life support system, will present the topic of “Medical Control of Advanced Life Support.”
R. Jack Ayres, Jr., a practicing trial lawyer and paramedic from Dallas, Texas will speak on the topic of “Medical Legal Aspects of EMS.” Presenting a dramatic program on “Crisis Intervention in EMS” will be David Knowlton and Dianne Wagner of the Human Skills Consortium, Lawrenceville, N.J. Mr. Knowlton is an EMT and Fire Captain with the West Trenton Fire Department and his presentation with Ms. Wagner will present to seminar attendees vivid examples of ‘people problems’ faced on the street by EMTs and paramedics.
Additional discussion topics
“Training and Continuing Education” promises to be a hot topic at all three seminars. The subject will be presented by Killarney, Fla. Fire District Commissioner Garry Briese. Mr. Briese also serves as Executive Director of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Rich Adams, a television news broadcaster in Washington, D.C. and fire fighter/EMT in the Maryland suburbs, will speak on the subject of “Public Education.”
The three seminars will be offered to fire service officials and administrators free of charge—there will be no registration fee. However, in order to control the size of the three programs, it will be necessary for attendees to reserve space in advance.
