2-Bay Station Opened in Auburn, N.Y.

features

A two-bay, single-story fire station with a basement has recently been opened in Auburn, N.Y. Although the station presently houses Engine 3 and a reserve pumper, it was designed to also accommodate a ladder company, and it therefore has the facilities for 10 or 12 men.

The drive-through apparatus room has doors with automatic openers and timed closers. Along one wall are areas for hose washing, drying and storage, and there is space for maintaining ladders and cleaning salvage covers. Rapid filling of booster tanks is made possible with the 1 ½-inch faucets in the truck room and there are outside faucets for washing trucks so that in the winter, the problem of snow, slush and salt on the apparatus floor will he alleviated. Primary gongs, house hells, tape register and radio equipment are installed in the apparatus room.

The bunk room, which has 10 beds, has soft lighting that is used for night alarms. We feel this is desirable to eliminate the harsh glare of conventional lighting that tends to startle a man as he awakens. There is space for blanket storage in the bunk room.

Two types of ventilation

The locker room includes storage shelves and tables, and it has both natural and artificial ventilation.

The day room, in t he front of the station, includes a small kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, cabinets, garbage disposal and a liberal counter area. A small dining area is in one corner of the room. Also in the room are a large blackboard for company training sessions, upholstered chairs, a TV set, radio and a bulletin board. There is space for personnel on duty to store their uniforms and a shelved storage closet.

In one corner of the station, next to the public entrance, is the captain’s office.

Shop in basement

There is a shop for repairing company equipment in the basement, as well as an all-purpose room that can be used for recreation, a boiler room for the gasfired hot water furnace and a room for an emergency generator.

In designing this station, our aim was to supply sufficient room for everyday operations while providing for the possibility of the station being used in the event of a disaster or even as department headquarters if this should ever be necessary.
