Vermont Firefighters Shift Cancer Prevention Focus to Clean Gear

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Experts have found that if firefighters don’t clean contaminants off their clothing and equipment, they have a higher risk of getting cancer.

Firefighters are often among the first rescuers to show up when there’s an emergency or when flames break out.

In the past, fire departments have focused on protecting their teams from respiratory problems, making their masks the most important piece of equipment.

Now, the focus is still to protect firefighters by making sure their equipment is cleaned often.
