“Working Safely With and Around Asbestos” is an 8-page booklet designed to facilitate asbestos training. It explains how to identify asbestos; where the most common sites for asbestos fibers are; personal protection equipment needed when working around asbestos; and safe on-the-job work practices and clean-up safety. The booklet encourages workers to ask questions when in doubt. To obtain sample copies, write a request on letterhead, or attach a business card, and send it to Krames Communications, Dept. ASBbus, 312-90th St., Daly City, CA 94015-1898.

A video training program on the use, care, and maintenance of air lifting bags is available from Paratech Inc. The 30-minute program tells how and why air bags work —it’s not a video on rescue techniques. Special emphasis is placed on the theory behind air bag lifting, how to calculate loads, and sizing bags for a proper lift. For more information, contact Paratech Inc., 1025 Lambrecht Road, P.O. Box G, Frankfort, IL 60423-0705, or call (815)469-3911.

A pamphlet on improving handling procedures for chlorine gas at nonresidential swimming pools is available from The Chlorine Institute. The 24-page manual covers connecting and disconnecting chlorine containers and operating, inspecting, and maintaining chlorination systems. Copies of the pamphlet, “Chlorine Safety at Nonresidential Swimming Pools,” may be obtained at no charge by writing on organization letterhead to The Chlorine Institute, 2001 L Street, NW, Suite 506, Washington, DC 20036.

It takes only one confused motorist at an accident scene to turn an incident under control into a disaster. “Traffic Control at Emergencies,” a training film from Media Resources, Inc., helps prevent this problem. The program teaches first responders how to protect victims and personnel, maintain a safe traffic flow, and create a safe work area. Demonstrations show the functions and procedures of traffic control operations. The program includes a study guide and an instructor’s guide. For more information, contact Media Resources, Inc., Dept. 102 R, 2614 Ft. Vancouver Way, Vancouver, WA 98661, or call (206) 693-3344.

“Emergency Care for Hazardous Materials Exposure,” a newly published book from C.V. Mosby Co., addresses the potential medical consequences of a haz-mat emergency. The manual, a field reference source, includes guidelines on substance identification, routes of exposure, life threat, signs and symptoms by system, decontamination procedures, and basic scene management. For more information, contact C.V. Mosby Co., 11830 Westline Industrial Dr., St. Louis, MO 63146, or call (314) 872-8370.
