The HIGH-RISE FIRE SIMULATOR from Firetac Systems is a new visual aid designed to simplify the task of training and planning for high-rise fires. A white porcelain, steel display board is the base for a side-view section of a high-rise building. Building features include two enclosed stairways, an elevator shaft, and a standpipe system. Magnetic symbols are used to represent firefighters, officers, and emergency medical personnel. Color-coded data cards with magnetic holders indicate information such as company numbers, assignments, status, staging areas, lobby control, and command points. It comes with a chrome, telescoping pointer, two washable ink marking pens, and an instructor’s manual.

A booklet entitled “AIDS & HIV DISEASE” is designed for use with large groups. The booklet describes the four recognized stages of the disease and their progression. A brief history on AIDS and tips on prevention are also discussed in the bookelt, which was written by Mr. Donald 1. Abrams, one of the first doctors to identify the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco. A new standardized BASIC AIRCRAFT RESCUE AND FIREFIGHTING TRAINING COURSE is available from the Federal Aviation Administration. The course is designed to assist airport operators in enhancing airport facility safety services. Successful completion should put candidates well on their way to meeting the criteria for the NFPA’s Standard for Airport Firefighter Professional Qualifications, according to the FAA.

The curriculum is in modular format, allowing airport operators greater flexibility in tailoring a course to meet specific local needs. The instructor’s package includes a 182-page guide and a 164-page student manual reproduction master. Also included are 43 transparency masters, one 12-page set of aircraft diagrams, one 12-page exam reproduction master, one 12-page exam key, and 344 color slides.

A TRAINING TRAILER from Vetter systerns, Inc. is designed to instruct personnel in the safe operation of all types of air bag products and can be scheduled for training seminars. The 18-foot trailer is completely self-contained, and has on board air, lighting, and generating systems, as well as leaking tanks for haz mat containment training. Each student is taught the proper use of high pressure air bags, mediumand low-pressure air bags, and leak-sealing equipment.

A film on FIRE IN HOMES IN REMOTE AND NATIVE COMMUNITIES is available from The Canadian Red Cross Society. Manitoba Division. In the 8-minute film, fires, including those caused by storing gas in houses, falling asleep while smoking, and dirty chimneys are discussed by a group of children who want to become firefighters. The host talks with them about the causes and preventative measures children can take within their own homes. The film has “stopping points” to allow discussion.
