Aug. 2—Over $30,000 in equipment was stolen from Key Peninsula Fire Aug. 1, the fire department said.
Someone broke into four vehicles at midnight outside the Key Center station, the department’s headquarters, and stole the gear inside.
“We right now are working with Pierce County Sheriff to identify who the subjects were and we’re going off leads from the community,” Key Peninsula Fire spokesperson Anne Nesbit told The News Tribune Friday.
The stolen gear included firefighters’ personal protective equipment as well as electronics in one of the department’s utility vehicles, Nesbit said.
On the day of the report, the missing gear totaled $29,000. Then the fire department said they had more missing items, so the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is estimating the stolen items are worth over $30,000, according to Sgt. Darren Moss, the sheriff’s spokesperson.
He said he doesn’t know if one thief or multiple thieves were involved in the break-ins.
He said that no suspects have been identified yet. The thief or thieves broke into a passenger van and three trucks: an F-250, an F-150 and a Dodge RAM 2500. Two vehicles had their windows broken, a third was unlocked, and the fourth vehicle had its locks cut but nothing taken out of it, according to Moss.
