Simulaids Inc. announces the introduction of CPR Kim and CPR Billy, both 24-inch, full-bodied manikins that respond to the correct administration of CPR.

Kim, and Billy have hearts under the sternum of their resilient plastic bodies, as well as expandable lungs. An attached aneroid manometer gives a readout of chest compression, and an airway valve opens when the head is correctly positioned. A jugular notch, xipoid process, nipples for reference points, and an apical pulse are additional features of both manikins.

Surveillance System

A computerized scanner that monitors building areas for smoke, fire or other hazards, has been introduced by Bayside Timers, Inc.

A prototype monitors inputs from 42 locations at a rate of 500 sweeps second. If the sensing element in a given location is triggered by an emergency condition, the scanner issues a coded audible signal identifying the endangered area and displays the same information on a digital readout.

The terminal is programmed to discriminate by priorities among the various locations. If two or more areas are endangered simutaneously, the one with the higher priority will abort the alarm signal from the other.

Air Mask Valve

A breathing apparatus pressure-demand valve that is designed to require no more than normal inhalation effort is offered by Globe Safety Products, Inc. The manufacturer reports that the valve will provide all the air needed during hard work without a feeling that the air supply is being restricted.

Globe states that the pressures associated with the valve are well within the parameters allowed by NIOSH. Static pressure in the mask, Globe states, is 1.3 inches of water column and NIOSH allows up to 1.5 inches. During inhalation flows of up to 200 liters j>er minute, the new valve limits the pressure drop to not more than 0.5 inches as against the NIOSH permissible drop of up to 1.5 inches. During exhalation flows up to 85 liters per minute, Globe says that exhalation effort will not exceed 1.0 inch of water column, as contracted with the NIOSH limit of 2.0 inches.
