Flame-Resistant Hood

Globe Manufacturing Company has announced a flame-resistant fire fighters hood of aluminized Nomex that is available in two styles, featuring a lift-front design that clasps the facepiece in position, model and protective cover, with replaceable parts.

The new hood is held securely to the body by underarm elasticized bands and is designed to be worn with flame-resistant aluminized clothing.

Knee Protection

Servus Rubber Company announces ProteKnee, now being incorporated in all Servus fire fighters storm king boots.

ProteKnee eliminates loose inside knee reinforcements and stops the cracks that occur when the boot top is folded. ProteKnee is made of orange polymer, which is applied to the inside of the boot at the folds.

Ampules

Scott Aviation. Health/Safety Products, A Division of A-T-O Inc., introduces Fit-Chek ampules to check the facepiece fit requirements of OSHA and ANSI recommendations. The crushable ampules contain isoamyl acetate and if the facepiece leaks, the wearer will smell the ampule odor.

Fire Alarm System

The Autocall Division of Federal Signal Corp. has introduced DirecTone, a building fire alarm system.

The loud, penetrating alarm is sounded automatically through DirecTone horns either throughout the building, or in selected areas. The DirecTone system also has a voice communications capability.

A feature of the DirecTone system is the CommFone, a telephone system that enables fire fighters to talk with the fire command post from any floor in the building.

Mobile Radio

Motorola Communications and Electronics, Inc., has introduced the Maxar-80, an underdash FM two-way mobile radio.

The unit measures 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches, and is available with 55 watts in low band, 25 or 50 watts in VHF and 30 watts in UHF. The Maxar-80 radio is housed in Cycolac ABS.

The Maxar-80 radio can serve as a base station. Its options include a public address system with a 6-watt speaker amplifier, private line and digital private line tone-coded squelch, and an extender circuit option that reduces ignition disturbance.

In-Plant Truck

A kit which converts Cushman’s full-ton flatbed vehicle into an in-plant fire truck is being marketed by Prime Manufacturing Corp.

Standard equipment includes a 125-gallon fiberglass tank, 10-hp engine, centrifugal pump with pressure capability up to 300 psi, and an electric-rewind hose reel with 200 feet of 3/4-inch hose. The vehicle can turn in a 17-foot circle and can carry a 16-foot aluminum ladder.

Control Panel

Emergency One, Inc., has announced a stainless steel top-mount control panel which is located above the midship pump and has direct valve linkage. The panel is well lighted and gives the pump operator a 360degree view of the fireground.

All valve control handles are of the vertical locking type. Pressure gages are adjacent to each control. Doors under the control panel are readily removable to provide access to the pump compartment.

Scanning Monitor

Electra Company has announced the Bearcat 250, a scanning monitor which can be programmed for up to 50 channels, with 10 activated at one time.

Frequencies are entered by keyboard without using crystals. Frequencies in five public service bands, including low, high and UHF, can be entered in any sequence in the 50 channel positions. Each channel entered into the Bearcat 250 can be programmed with special instructions. In addition, the unit can search a band and automatically store in its memory all active frequencies found.

Detectors

Square D Company has introduced four UL-Listed Earli-Gard smoke detector models. Each unit features solid-state construction, dual ionization chambers and a wide range of sensitivity.

Earli-Gard detectors are available in four styles: hard-wired single station; hard wired multiple station; hard wired multiple station with auxiliary contacts; and single station, battery-operated. A universal mounting plate permits easy installation on walls of ceilings.

Floating Rescue Platform

New Products Corporation has announced the Life Saver, a floating platform for water and ice rescues.

Fully extended, the Life Saver is 18 1/2 feet long. Folded it is 9 1/4 feet long. The platform is 20 inches wide, and the device with accessories weighs 200 pounds. The unit’s two air bags have a buoyancy rating of 825 pounds. The aluminum hinge is rated at 500 pounds. Hooks are at the rear of the platform so a standard fire department ladder can push the Life Saver toward an ice victim.

DC Transformer

Dynamote Corp., offers the Triton, a 120-volt transformer that operates from a standard alternator. Model E10-12 is designed to operate 120-volt floodlights and power tools with universal motors. It connects three AC taps on a heavy-duty, 12-volt alternator and produces up to 1200 watts of 120-volt DC power.

The Triton can be mounted and operated in any position.

Pump Shift Indicator

Grumman Fire Service Equipment has introduced a universal pump shift indicator that shows the pump operator when he has shifted from road to pump. Grumman’s device, which weighs under 5 pounds, can he installed on a new or existing apparatus.

The shift indicator has a panel light inside his cab that shows when the pump is in gear.
