Modular clothing system

A new modular protective clothing system from Cairns & Brother has been approved by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) for use in New York City.

The new NFPA-compliant FDNY TC-4/ TC-5 clothing system features Cairns’ patented Collar-Break interchangeable thermal liner system It allows the firefighter to change a wet outer shell or liner for a dry one by a main anchoring point at the collar for easy removal and replacement. CollarBreak puts the collar on the liner with an overlapping fit to the shell that keeps out water and debris.

Two-way radio

Flectronic Industries Inc. announces its latest two-way radio. Model FC-100, for fire use only.

Model FC-100 has been designed specifically for firefighters to communicate, hands-free, from inside a gas mask. It can be operated in extreme heat or cold, is shockproof but lightweight, is safe for use in gas or chemical fires, is FCC approved, and broadcasts and receives on the restricted 154 MHZ vhf fireman’s frequency.

Two-way radio allows hands-free communication

Portable meter

A portable flow’ and pressure meter is now available from Fire Research Corp. It can be used to test hydrants, sprinklers, standpipes, and pumpers. It will read from approximately 30-1,400 gpm and pressures to 250 psi. The meter is available in both gauge and digital.

Underwater communications

New Technology Systems Inc. announces the availability of its hardwire underwater communication system, Buddy-Comm. Designed especially for public safety/rescue divers, the system increases safety and comfort in rescue, search, and recovery operations in black water or zero visibility.

Use of the Buddy-Comm enables the line tender to constantly monitor the progress of the diver, eliminating the need for frequent ascents.

New software

Fireline Systems has recently completed the development of software that will permit its Fireground Command Simulator to run on IBM personal computers or any IBM compatible system. All that is necessary is an IBM or equivalent color graphics adaptor and a monitor that is capable of producing color or shades of monochrome images.

New high-pressure adaptor

Airtech introduces the new fill-safe 4,500psi self-contained breathing apparatus adaptor for charging high-pressure air cylinders. The new adaptor will only charge 4,500-psi SCBA cylinders. It will not charge 2,216-psi air cylinders, making it impossible to overcharge the lower pressure cylinders, according to the company.

High-expansion foam generator

The fast-response portable high-expansion foam generator has been introduced by MSA. It is used to cover small chemical spills, thereby reducing the chances of toxic or combustible vapors being released into the air.

Applications include haz-mat emergency response teams; municipal fire departments; and manufacturers, users, and handlers of toxic and combustible materials.

Siamese unit

The Micrajust Siamese is now available from Micrajust Manufacturing Company. Any pumper with discharge ports located 11-20 inches apart can use the Micrajust Siamese. It is manufactured to obtain a flow of 2,450 gpm with a friction loss of 10 pounds. The unit is hydrostatically tested to 500 pounds.

Compact pager

General Electric has introduced the Beacon Monitor Pager, a lightweight unit designed to receive selective two-tone paging calls or, at the flip of a switch, monitor all messages on a given channel. The Beacon is available in low band, high band, and UHF frequencies and has high/low volume settings.
