New SCBA

The BG-174A’s closed-circuit oxygen selfcontained breathing apparatus from National Draeger Inc. provides the wearer with up to four hours of working time even under the most strenuous conditions, according to the company. The apparatus operates by using a supplemental compressed oxygen supply and regenerated expired breath.

The four-hour BG-174A can be used by fire departments that perform mine rescue work or respond to emergency calls at highrise buildings, subways, or underground storage areas.

Radio mount

Gamber-Johnson introduces the ShortStack, a below-the-dash mount for multiple mobile radio units. The mount bolts to the floor of any vehicle and allows each radio to be removed independently for installation and repairs. A solid frame of heavy-gauge steel holds two or three radios firmly in place.

The mount accepts mobile radios, scanners, siren and light bar controls, and similar equipment. It can be adjusted to the exact width of the equipment cluster.

Portable winch

Porta-Power, from the Powerwinch Division of the Scott Fetzer Co., is a new selfcontained, cordless, portable winch, powered by a built-in, high-powered battery pack. The unit weighs 26 pounds and delivers 1,000 pounds of pulling power.

The Porta-Power can be used in remote locations where there’s no other power source. Its uses include clearing wreckage; dragging vehicles out of sand, snow, or mud; and cleaning up highways after storms.

The Tote Wagon from Wells Cargo Inc. mobilizes emergency supplies and equipment. Its body is 10 feet long by 6 feet wide. The trailer is equipped with a posibve-lix’king ball coupler and can be towed by almost any vehicle, according to the company. The interior is plywood-lined; the exterior is prefinished aluminum.

Flow reading device

Fire Research Corp.’s Flowmeters will give accurate flow readings of each individual discharge and the total flow.

Once the flow is set, the Flowmeter automatically provides the pressure required. The Flowmeter will improve the pump operator’s ability to see and control what’s happening on the fireground.

Rescue harness

The full body harness from Blue Water/ Rescue Systems Inc. is recommended for use where severe fall hazards exist. It can be used as a persortnel-lifting/lowering harness. Hydra-Shield Manufacturing Inc. has announced the availability of the Hydra-Storz system, an improved method of attaching large-diameter hose to the fire hydrant. The new system makes it possible to replace the old-fashioned threaded adaptor with a tamper-proof, vandal-proof Storz connection that is permanently attached to the fire hydrant.

The Hydra-Storz connector is available in any thread configuration in both fourand five-inch storz connections.

Weight-training machine

Universal Gym Equipment Inc. introduces the Spartan I, a new multistation weighttraining machine for firefighter physical fitness training. The Spartan 1 occupies only 10 feet by 12 feet of floor space and is 7 feet high. Up to five people can work out on the machine simultaneously.

Warning system

A low-cost, high-impact warning system for emergency vehicles is now available from Dunbar-Nunn Corp. Called Unitrol Quadra-Speeds, the units provide dynamic warning power by animating standard vehicle headlights, brake lights, backup lights, and horns. They can also be used with fog lights, spotlights, and alley lights. Unitrol Quadra-Speeds create wig-wag, modulating, and X patterns from existing vehicle lights.

Fire Research Corp. offers a completely mobile hose storage and handling system. It’s adjustable and will hold any hose size up to 100 feet of six-inch hose.

Polar-compound AFFF concentrates can be used by fire departments or in fixed system layouts such as those found in refineries, chemical plants, airplane hangars, and large warehouses.

The New Pig Corp. introduces the Haz-Mat Pig, which is a 46-inch-long tubular sock that can be used to contain and absorb chemical spill materials, including acids, caustics, and flammable solvents. The HazMat Pig can absorb nearly one gallon of fluid in less than five minutes, according to the manufacturer.

The Haz-Mat Pig is packaged in a chemical-resistant, resealable, polyethylene bucket. After use, it can be safely stored in its original bucket until it’s neutralized or properly discarded.
