Built of rugged 10-gauge steel for strength and security, the Model 15 can accommodate 28 55-gallon drums or 14,000 pounds of bulk material in containers. It comes with sprinkler heads, a 2Vi-inch water line, security locks, and a ventilation system. Optional items include an explosion-proof lighting, ventilation, and electrical wiring system; safety shower units; a dry-chemical fire protection system; and temperature control.

Evacuation chair

Only one operator is needed to transport disabled persons down stairs using the Evac + Chair.

A braking and traction system of friction belts slows descent proportionally to the passenger’s weight, allowing gravity and friction to do most of the work. The chair, from Evac + Chair Corp., has a capacity of 300 pounds, requires no installation, and stores on a furnished wall mount.

Breathing apparatus

Survivair introduces a new Mark 2 SCBA that’s been redesigned to meet and exceed NFPA performance requirements.

The new SCBA model has increased air flow capacity, an abrasion-resistant mask lens, Nomex exterior and Kevlar interior harness straps, and a cylinder band that allows cylinders to be changed quickly.

A low-pressure, 30-minute Mark 2 is now available, while high-pressure 30and 60-minute systems are due out this year. Upgrade kits are also available for older Mark 2 units.

Emergency siren

Federal Signal Corp. introduces a new model in its PA500 siren line.

The PA500L package includes all-electric siren functions; a 3-mode master slide light and master control switch; five illuminated pushbutton switches; alley lights; front light cut-off; common microphone capability; and an optional power jack. It’s easy to install in any negative-ground vehicle with a 12-volt electrical system.

Smoke detector

The Battery Back-Up Smoke Detector, like other smoke detectors, sounds when there’s a rise in temperature, smoke, or light from a fire. But it also has a batterypowered reserve power source, charged by a built-in unit through an AC line. It can alert residents to a power failure or a blown fuse.

Infrared thermometer

A new, advanced infrared thermometer designed to quickly locate hot spots has been introduced by Kane-May Measuring Instruments.

The INF1501 Infrared Scanner/Therrnometer allows fire personnel to quickly identify and measure hot spots by just standing in the middle of a room.

Safety gate

Eire Research Corp.’s Guardian Gate is designed to help protect firefighters while they’re riding in the jumpseat.

The gate features a dual-lock concept. It locks on both top and bottom hinges, as well as having a third lock that prevents either hinge from operating unless the release mechanism is manually triggered.

Hale Eire Pump Co. introduces six new attachments for its Jaws of Life rescue tool products.

There’s a conical point for making quick access holes; a base plate for better force distribution; a V-block to secure the grip on uneven and round surfaces; a wedge to help lift, separate, cut, and divide; two shackle pins for quick hookup; and a Jaw adapter. All come in one carrying case.

On-site communications system

The JobCom On-Site Communication system features a base station transceiver designed for desktop use; the unit is smaller than most office calculators.

In addition to the JobCom On-Site Paging Base Station, Ritron Inc. offers JobCom portable radios and paging receivers. When signaled from the base station, the pager sounds, and voice communications from the base can then follow. The system operates on VHF/FM business frequencies, eliminating channel jamming and interference.

The Slimguard headset weighs only 8 ounces, but provides up to 35 decibels of noise exclusion.

Containment system

Aero Tec Laboratories Inc. introduces the Port-A-Berm, a low-cost, highly effective dike which prevents the loss of toxic or flammable liquids in the event of a tank failure, spill, or leak.

The system is a self-supporting, airinflated pond with a special chemicalresistant liner. It’s fully collapsible, easily transportable, and reusable. Port-ABerm is available in four standard sizes.

Protective helmet

The Firedome II helmet, available from E.D. Bullard, has been modified to meet NFPA 1972.

The helmet now sits lower on the head for greater balance and stability; the faceshield has been improved to provide greater heat and flame resistance; and a quick-release chin strap aids in donning and doffing SCBA.
