Twin Agent System

Fire Combat Inc., introduces a twin agent system, aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) and dry rhemical apparatus. Self-contained and highly mobile, it can be operated by one man and in areas where it is difficult to deploy heavier equipment or where water or hydrants are not available. The chemical collapses the flame allowing quick reduction in temerature. The manufacturer states that the design gives superior cross-wind performance in combatting class A, B, and C fires.

Safety Parka

A heavy-duty, cold weather fire resistant safety parka of 6 ounce, Nomex III outer fabric has been introduced by Body Guard, Division of Lion Uniform, Inc. The inside quilted thermal liner is Nomex quilt with a Nomex vapor barrier coated with flame retardant Neoprene that protects the wearer from rain, snow, wind, cold, and intense heat. Optional Nomex hood is detachable.

Air Cylinders

Mine Safety Appliances Company (MSA), offers three types of low-pressure air cylinders for self-contained, supplied air or combination breathing apparatus.

The cylinder is made of aluminum wrapped in S-glass filaments imbedded in epoxy resin. At 10.5 pounds, it is nearly twice as light, but structurally stronger than MSA’s 19-pound steel cylinder. Another lightweight alternative to the steel cylinder is the hoop-wound composite cylinder. At 12 pounds it is slightly heavier than the fully-wound unit, but significantly lighter and stronger than the steel cylinder. Both composite cylinders have a rated service life of 30 minutes.

Communication Systems

TACTES Systems Inc., introduces three additions to communication. The TAC100S, a two-channel portable communications system offers RF power, weather-sealed case, earphone jack, quick release external battery and belt clip back as standard equipment.

A Channel Management system, a high speed digital trunking system that provides 5 to 20 channel two-way radios automatic and private access to open channels, uses a series of computer-controlled repeaters and a rack-mounted controller to seek out and assign open channels.

A series of TAC500 desk top base stations featuring two channel operation under local control, or single channel operation under extended local or DC remote control, has also been introduced. The local control models contain operational controls on the front panel and include a desk microphone.

Torso Liner

Janesville Apparel introduces a turnout coat winter liner that doubles as a station house vest. The torso liner snaps inside the thermal liner of any Janesville coat for cold weather operations. Its sleeveless design results from research showing that if torso temperature is maintained, the body automatically transfers heat to the arms.

Available in 5 ounce polyester and nylon quilt or 12 ounce wool melton, the liner has an inside pocket, two-way snaps, and is sewn with Kevlar thread.

The BioPak 60P from Rexnord is a self-contained breathing apparatus combining positive pressure with closed circuit technology lasting 60 minutes. The BioPak’s positive pressure facepiece prevents inward leakage of air, making it safe in oxygen deficient or toxic atmospheres. The 60 minute duration, closed circuit engineering, and 25 pound weight, allow for emergency escape or long search and rescue procedures. The BioPak 60P is approved by NIOSH and MSHA and complies with the Subpart L ruling of OSHA fire protection standards.

Motorola Inc., Communications Sector introduces the OPTRX Alphanumeric Pager which provides tone and voice alert, LCD display readout, and memory. The OPTRX Pager has a backlit LCD display for a single message of up to 80 characters and spaces. The memory feature provides for up to 4 data messages, totalling 160 characters which can be stored indefinitely. Address flexibility provides 8 total functions, each individually assigned with 4 of the addresses optionally available for group call or all-call.

Akron introduces a Mid-Range (60-200 gpm) fog and straight stream automatic nozzle engineered for 1 1/2, 1 3/4 and 2 inch hose lines. The Volume Control Mechanism is designed to allow the nozzleman to restrict or increase flow by turning the Volume Control Ring. The Volume Control Mechanism, and pistol grip are optional, with a choice of spinning teeth or a double row of fixed, rounded teeth A flush feature, which permits flushing without shutting down, is standard.

Smothering Materials

Rentokil Safety Products offers fire smothering cloths and blankets, which can withstand temperatures that would melt an aluminum pan, according to the manufacturer By using woven glass, asbestos contamination is avoided. The woven glass can be washed and reused. Smoke curtains for industrial use are designed to compliment sprinkler systems; combined with ventilators, reservoirs are created by the curtains to help prevent fumes and smoke spreading.
