Breathing Apparatus

Mine Safety Appliances Company (MSA), has announced development of a high-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus designed to be used with either a 30 or 60 minute air supply.

The Custom 4500 Air Mask is rated at 4500 psig and comes equipped with interchangeable lightweight aluminum-fiberglass composite, high-pressure air cylinders. Aluminum cylinder cores are wound with S-glass filaments imbedded with epoxy resin for durability and weight saving. The 88 cubic feet 60 minute cylinder is fully wound and weighs 26 pounds when charged. The 45 cubic feet 30 minute cylinder is hoop-wound and weighs 15 pounds when charged. A clamp allows the user to interchange cylinders in seconds. Pressure demand regulator maintains positive pressure in the facepiece and keeps breathing resistance to a minimum. High pressure design saves weight and lets fire fighters work for up to an hour when using the higher capacity cylinder.

Centrifugal Fire Pump

A Ram Series singlestage centrifugal fire pump has been developed by FMC Corporation’s Fire Apparatus Operation, and the FMC Turbo Pump Operation. The new design provides higher water pressures and increased flow at lower engine horsepower and rpm.

Available on the firm’s pumpers in capacities of 750 through 1500 gpm, all models use the same pump body, gear box, and impeller. The two-section pump body is split horizontally on a single plane for easy removal of the entire impeller housing and gear case assembly from beneath the chassis.

The discharge valve body mounts directly to the pump discharge manifold eliminating piping and reducing friction loss to a minimum. The suction bowl and impeller are designed to permit volume discharge ratings at lower engine speeds. A standard 3-inch tank-to-pump valve with externally mounted swing check allows maximum flow from the tank and prevents pressurization of the booster tank.
