The Hale Fire Pump Company presented its 1985 Jaws of Life Rescue Award to the Baton Rouge, LA, City Police Rescue Squad, which has used the tool in more than 700 extrications. The new award was presented to Chief Wayne Rogillio.
The department bought its first Jaws of Life tool, Model 26A Spreader, in May 1976. The squad also depends on the Jaws of Life Omni combination spreading/cutting tool and the four-cycle gasoline power unit.
Almost 600 lives have been saved during the squad’s 700 calls in the past 10 years.
The United States Fire Administration (USFA) has announced plans to develop a revitalized public education program on fire prevention. The public relations/advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather will assist USFA in this effort.
With 2.3-million fires, 6,000 deaths, and 100,000 fire injuries each year, USFA sees the need for increased public education efforts to improve this nation’s fire safety practices.
A detailed, strategic plan will be the guideline for USFA’s effort. Two national public information campaigns will be developed to reach residential dwellers, community groups, and private businesses.
Hydra-Shield Manufacturing Inc., a supplier and manufacturer of products for the firefighting and water works industries, has been puchased by H.J. “Fritz” Stehling from Detroit, Mi-based U.S. Group Inc. Hydra-Shield markets a complete line of fire hydrant accessories that help increase fire departments’ response efficiency and manpower effectiveness, allow hydrant thread standardization, and aid in protecting water equipment from vandalism.
Stehling, principal stockholder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Irving, TX-based Hydra-Shield Manufacturing, also announced the addition of three new lines of fire products. Offered by acquisition of a line of adapters and fittings from Scandia Industries, and through joint agreements with lines from Carlin Valve Company and Hydra-Squid Monitors, these extensions will create a re-alignment of HydraShield’s fire and water products, and represent access to a total fire hardware system.
This year, Hydra-Shield plans to expand the manufacture of hydrant accessories and repair parts.
