May 2-6—Training in fighting chemical and hydrocarbon fires will be offered during the LAMAR UNIVERSITY 19th ANNUAL FIREFIGHTERS TRAINING SCHOOL in Beaumont, Texas. Professional instructors will provide uniform training in fire brigade operations through discussion and hands-on experience. Conference session topics include “Handling High-Pressure Gas Fires,” “Chemical Transportation,” and “Testing and Certification of Protective Equipment.” The school is designed for municipal, industrial, and volunteer fire departments, as well as safety directors, supervisors, managers, fire and safety coordinators, and members of fire brigades. May 4-6—The THIRD ANNUAL PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICERS TRAINING CONFERENCE will concentrate on face-toface encounters with the media. Designed for departmental information officers in all emergency services, the conference will help prepare the PIO for the day his or her agency is in the media spotlight. May 5-6—“VENTILATION METHODS AND TECHNIQUES,” two one-day sessions taught by John Mittendorf, a battalion chief with the Los Angeles City Fire Department and commander of its In-Service Training Section, will be held in Irvine, Calif. May 9-13—Ohio’s 43rd ANNUAL STATE FIRE SCHOOL will offer 26 courses, including “Leadership and Command,” “Rescue and Water Safety,” “Heavy Rescue,” and “Computers for the Fire Service.” Participants receive hands-on firefighting experience in many of the courses, which will be held at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. May 14—A HAZARDOUS-MATERIALS RESPONSE SAFETY SEMINAR will be conducted in St. Louis by The Safety Specialists Inc. The seminar is designed to increase on-scene safety awareness at a haz-mat incident. May 20-22—Aerial platforms, ladders, pumpers, and rescue trucks will be displayed at the 16TH ANNUAL LANCASTER COUNTY FIREMEN’S EXPOSITION.
