Of special interest is the new Standard for Safety for Energy Management Systems, UL 916.

The National Fire Protection Association published a new edition of its guide to industrial fire protection and prevention. The INDUSTRIAL FIRE HAZARDS HANDBOOK, second edition, covers the fire risks and hazards associated with major manufacturing processes. The President’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped offers a guide to help safety conscious employers include disabled people in their emergency management plans. “Employers Are Asking About the Safety of Handicapped Workers When Emergencies Occur” reveals eight ways to ensure that disabled people are fully considered in planning for emergencies and when crises actually occur, and lists additional sources of information for more help with emergency evacuation plans. A simulated tactical exercise program featuring slides that simulate fire and smoke on selected hazards in petroleum plants is available from American Animation Inc. Each training package includes: four 35mm slides, one overhead transparency line drawing of the area, pre-planning information sheet, and an instructor’s guide outlining details for setting up the simulation exercise and the use of each of the slides. The National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester, NY, Institute of Technology has produced Fire in the Dormitory, a fullcolor, captioned videotape that dramatizes a serious fire in a college residence hall. Developed in cooperation with the Henrietta and Rochester Fire Departments, the 18minute videotape illustrates the dangers of carelessness and the need for personal responsibility in preventing fires. The videotape raises questions regarding the concerns of fighting a fire in an apartment building that houses deaf or hearing-impaired people. What kind of improvements have been made in emergency alarm systems for the deaf? Would it be feasible for firefighters to learn some basic sign language? The National Fire Protection Association released a multi-media training system aimed at the specific needs of industrial fire brigades. The fire brigade training program combines modern video teaching techniques with classroom learning and reading material. Topics covered include fire concepts, building protection systems, equipment use and maintenance, evacuation and extinguishment, and salvage.
