Some Michigan Firefighters Concerned About New Training Standards

Michigan Public Act 291 will set a minimum training standard for the state’s fire departments to comply, reports 3 WWMT.

Most of the state is covered by volunteer or paid on-call fire departments.

Jeff Sorensen, the supervisor for Cooper Township, expresses his concerns, “The way they started would make it almost impossible, if not impossible for a paid on call department to exist. The way public act 291 was written, it would overburden any person that is a volunteer fireman that has a full time job and a family to be able to complete the necessary training and qualifications that they would have to have to retain their certificate.”

Public Act 291 is a work in progress and is subject to change.
