Report: Underground Radio Communications May Be Weak Spot in NYC MCI Response

Several EMTs reportedly told the New York Post that, despite firefighter and police efforts on joint training during a recent drill, underground communications remain a weak point in the city’s plan to deal with a mass-casualty event such as a mass shooting or terrorist attack.

The Post reported that one EMT commenting on the recent three-hour interagency drill said that responders’ “radios do not work underground,” making communications in a subway response scenario difficult.

The report noted that the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and New York Police Department (NYPD) have made strides in their underground communications since the attacks of 9/11.
