According to a report from KOIN, Portland (OR) Fire and Rescue (PFR) was the recipient of heavy criticism following a city audit, which accused the department of a lack of diversity among its employees.
Although Chief Sara Boone became the first black woman to ascend to the PFR’s top spot in 2019, the audit found that minority members, including those of color, women, and LGBTQ+ do not comprise enough of the department’s workforce.
Auditor Mary Hull Caballero found that, out of the 700 PFR employees in 2021, 89% are white and 79% are male. Additionally, the audit also says the PFR does not do a good enough job holding its employees accountable.
