NHTSA/U.S. Fire Service to develop civilian safety program
Child passenger safety, bicycle safety, pedestrian safety, and school bus safety will be some of the topics addressed as part of a national 18-hour educational training program for the nation`s emergency fire and rescue personnel.
Sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Fire Service, the program will be developed by the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, University of Maryland, which will also develop an in-depth train-the-trainer program to prepare instructors to teach the new curriculum. Both programs will be pilot tested in several locations nationally. When completed, the programs will be available to U.S. fire and rescue organizations.
The NHTSA will fund the initial 18-month period; there are also plans to continue the cooperative efforts in safety program development and training.
