NASFM in favor of Pascrell bill

While we agree with much of Bill Manning`s “Stand Behind the Bill!” (Editor`s Opinion, August 1998), the article was inaccurate in one significant way. The National Association of State Fire Marshals categorically endorses Rep. Pascrell`s legislation (21st Century Fire and Public Safety Act), and we intend to actively seek passage of this important measure. If other groups care to join with us, they are welcome. If not, we do not care. If anyone has said we oppose this important piece of legislation, that is not so.
Moreover, the NASFM does not endorse legislation “in concept,” because that means nothing to public officials attempting to gauge reactions to their proposal. We appreciate most of what Manning wrote, but we ask that he correct the record insofar as who we are and what we support.
