Texas Instructor of Year

W. B. (Cotton) Dorman, assistant training specialist with the Fire Protection Training Division of Texas A&M University, received the Instructor of the Year Award of the Texas Society of Fire Service Instructors at the opening of the 49th annual Firemen’s Training School at College Station in July.

Dorman’s fire service career started in the Meridian Fire Department in 1932. He advanced through every position and was chief of that department for 13 years. He first attended the Texas Firemen’s Training School in 1938 and after being an instructor at the school for 14 years, he joined the staff of the Texas A&M Fire Protection Training Division in 1965. Since then, he has conducted classes in fire departments throughout th.e state.

New Miami Chief

Deputy Chief Herman W. Brice has been named chief of the Miami Fire Department, replacing Don Hickman, who retired.

Brice, a 25-year veteran, has served as company officer, district chief, fire marshal and deputy chief of operations. He holds and an associate degree from the Miami Dade Community College.

Hickman, who has been chief since 1974, joined the fire department in 1947. As chief he has maintained a Class I rating for the department, instituted a strong fire code enforcement, formed a citizens’ committee for fire prevention, and helped develop the fire paramedic service into one of the finest in the country. He has held membership on a number of 1AFC and NFPA committees, and was chairman of the Standard Council for Fire Fighters and Fire Officers of the State of Florida.
