I recently heard the exciting news that Fire Engineering is about to develop a National Fire Academy Alumni Association and wanted to forward my congratulations.

The key element to the success of any educational institution is a closely organized network of alumni. It allows them to interact with students from different classes and eras. It provides a forum for academic discussion and debate, thereby leading to even more professional growth and development. Finally, it allows alumni the opportunity to affiliate, with pride, with their alma mater.

In professional circles, the National Fire Academy is viewed as the premier fire training institution in the world. Your efforts will only serve to strengthen that position.

Please accept my best wishes for an outstanding success.

I was very pleased to learn of the formation of the National Fire Academy Alumni Association.

As Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), I certainly realize the importance of training and education to the nation?s fire and emergency services. The mission of FEMA?s U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is to reduce the loss of lives and property due to fires. This is accomplished through a combination of USFA programs and the excellent training provided by USFA?s National Fire Academy (NFA).

I know that both U.S. Fire Administrator [Carrye B.] Brown and NFA Superintendent [Denis] Onieal join me in welcoming the Association as an ally to further our joint mission of training and education for the fire service. I am sure that Dr. Onieal will make every effort to keep you abreast of NFA programs and initiatives. Please contact him directly whenever the need arises.

We look forward to working with the National Fire Academy Alumni Association to promote fire service education.
