FL Firefighter Wins Congressional Career Service Award

East Manatee (FL) Fire Rescue District Training Officer Tim Hyden was presented the Congressional Career Service Award on September 17. Hyden received the award from United States Congressman Vern Buchanan during the inaugural Florida 13th District Congressional Fire, Rescue and EMS Awards Ceremony held in Sarasota.

Chief Byron Teates nominated Hyden for this award, stating that he has made several tremendous accomplishments to the District over the last seven years in the area of firefighter training and safety and that the his endeavors have also had an influence county-wide and across the state.

Teates cited the following reasons for his nomination:

  • the system of documentation Hyden developed to track ISO required training that helped improved the District’s ISO rating
  • an in-house Supervisor Proficiency Program Hyden created based on NFPA 1002
  • certifying all District Firefighters as Incident Safety Officers
  • organizing the Back to School Awareness campaign which has become an annual District program
  • developing a tailored NIMS training program for Manatee County
  • inspiring interest in risk management for the fire service at the state level
  • and coordinating several county-wide drills on NIMS, hazardous materials, and multiple patient incidents

Teates noted the success of a recent school bus accident with over 20 patients has been attributed to the training organized by Hyden.

Hyden is a regular Fire Engineering author and a presenter at FDIC.
