Almost every community has some type of water rescue potential. Compared to the man technical rescue disciplines, water operations are probably the most likely scenario to occur in most communities.
This sample scenario will allow you to review the incident scenario and discuss your department’s operations for this type of response. Determine your initial company actions, activation of additional resources, and crew assignments for the initial phases of this operation. Use your department’s SOG for this incident scenario and use the area map and operations to check sheets as supplements to your scenario. Crew safety and proper PPE (including personal floatation devices) must be available and required for all of our responders.

Forest Reeder began his fire service career in 1979. He currently serves as Battalion Chief / Director of Training & Safety with the Pleasantview (IL) Fire Protection District (www.plvw.org) and is the Director of Training for Southwest United Fire Districts (www.sufd.org). In these capacities, he is responsible for the design, implementation and coordination of in-service training activities as well as a full-service fire training academy program. Forest holds numerous Illinois fire service certifications and holds a Masters Degree in Public Safety Administration from Lewis University.
