The start of every shift provides a chance for the company to communicate expectations of each other and to make sure that life safety equipment is ready for use. Becoming complacent in your routine equipment checks and inventories of apparatus equipment can have deadly consequences.
This drill walks through some of the regular daily duty assignments that can be used as starting points for a supervising officer to set the priorities of the day and to communicate what is expected of members throughout a shift. Consult your department’s procedures for this type of event and set the stage for a positive and safe shift!

Forest Reeder began his fire service career in 1979. He currently serves as Battalion Chief / Director of Training & Safety with the Pleasantview (IL) Fire Protection District (www.plvw.org) and is the Director of Training for Southwest United Fire Districts (www.sufd.org). In these capacities, he is responsible for the design, implementation and coordination of in-service training activities as well as a full-service fire training academy program. Forest holds numerous Illinois fire service certifications and holds a Masters Degree in Public Safety Administration from Lewis University.
