Drill of the Week: Equipment Knowledge

By Forest Reeder

How well do you know the equipment you are assigned to use? Firefighters must know the use, care, maintenance, capabilties, and limitations of everything they are assigned to use. These five criteria are recognized as the basic knowledge levels that you should have regarding each piece of equipment.

Complete this training session by referring to applicable NFPA standards and manufacturers information and specifications. Review your procedures for accepting and placing new equipment into service according to these criteria as part of this session. The list of tools and equipment that could be assigned to this drill are virtually endless. You might want to select a tool or family of tools to do this drill with on a weekly basis.
