Drill of the Week: Company Preplanning

By Forest Reeder

A key to effective tactics is for companies to have a working knowledge of the occupancy that they are going to work in. Conducting company level preplans is one way to improve your ability to safely operate at incidents by having familiarity of the structure and by having a standardized set of information available to work from.

Preplans should be what their name implies: a pre-incident plan for fire operations. Conduct surveys according to department standards, develop a plan of action, train everyone on it, and consult this information during the incident.
