Drill of the Week: Attic Fires

By Forest Reeder

Working below an area involved in fire is an inherently dangerous place for crews to work. Fires in attic present unique problems to firefighters and require specific tactical decisions for the operation. Access, impact on the structure, length of time burning, and the safest attack mode and direction are some of the decisions required of the first-arriving crews. Determine a strategy and appropriate tactics, determine the location of the first line(s), and identify specific duties for each member of your crew based on your SOGs.
