Weiland to Leave International Code Council

International Code Council Chief Executive Officer Rick Weiland announced today he will be leaving the association to pursue other opportunities. Weiland has been CEO since 2006, after serving as Chief Operating Officer from 2003-2006.

During his tenure at the Code Council, Weiland was instrumental in guiding the organization through the critical early years after the 2003 consolidation of three regional code organizations. Weiland forged new partnerships and alliances that expanded the Code Council’s influence, and he successfully led ICC through the difficult times brought on by the recession in 2008.

“Rick guided the Code Council through many challenging years and he leaves big shoes to fill,” said ICC Board President Bill Dupler. “The organization is much stronger than it was when he first joined ICC back in 2003 and his contributions have helped put us in a position to see even greater success in the future.” Dupler added, “Rick’s entire career has been about public service, and I know he will continue to make contributions in his future endeavors. All of us at ICC wish him the best.”

Under Weiland’s leadership, the Code Council developed the nation’s first green construction code, expanded its reach to create a truly global presence, and embarked on a series of initiatives to embrace the digital age and develop online products for designers, builders and regulators.

“Serving as COO and CEO of the Code Council has been an incredibly rewarding chapter in my career and I am proud of the progress we have been able to make to advance public safety over the last decade,” said Rick Weiland. “ICC has a talented and dedicated staff and it has been an honor leading them in the service of our Members. It is now the right time for me to move on to new challenges.”

Dominic Sims, C.B.O., Executive Vice President and Director of Operations for ICC, will serve as acting CEO while the Code Council conducts an international search for Weiland’s successor. Upon naming Sims to lead in this new role, President Dupler remarked, “I know the day to day operations of the Code Council will be in the capable hands of a leader who is committed not only to our profession but is also dedicated to the Code Council’s mission.”
