USFA offers fire and arson reports

USFA offers fire and arson reports

Fire in the United States, ninth edition (FA 173) and Arson in the United States (FA 174) are now available from the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Covering the 10-year period from 1985 to 1994, Fire in the United States focuses on the year 1994, the most recent year for which complete data were available at printing time. Based primarily on the National Fire Incident Reporting Systems (NFIRS), the report also contains survey results and data from the National Fire Protection Association and the state fire marshals.

Data on the magnitude and characteristics of the arson problem, factors that contribute to the incidence of arson, and the challenges involved in dealing with arson–the number-one cause of fires–are covered in Arson in the United States. In each of the past 10 years, more than 500,000 arson fires have occurred. During 1994, an estimated 548,000 arson fires occurred, resulting in 560 deaths; 3,440 injuries; and $3.6 billion in property damage.

Free copies of these reports may be obtained from the United States Fire Administration, Publications, 16825 South Seton Avenue, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. Place Internet orders at the FEMA/USFA Web site at http://www.usfa.fema.gov, or download the online versions of the reports at http://www.usfa.fema.gov/nfdc/fius.htm.
